What Is competitive Jump Rope?
Competitive jump rope is an organized sport where athletes perform jump rope skills in a structured, judged environment. It’s a lot more advanced than just playground skipping.
At the competitive level, athletes train routines that combine speed, power, coordination, and creativity. There are a few main types of events:
Speed events
These focus on how fast you can jump. For example, athletes might see how many jumps they can do in 30 seconds or 3 minutes without missing.
Power events (double unders / triples)
This is about strength and timing. A double under means the rope passes under your feet twice in one jump. Triple unders the rope passes under the feet three times!
Freestyle routines
This is where it gets more like a performance. Athletes build choreographed routines set to music, combining footwork, tricks (crosses, wraps, releases), gymnastics/dance style moves. Judges score based on difficulty, presentation, and required elements.
Team events
Athletes can compete in pairs or teams using single ropes, and/or double dutch ropes.
